Can my fourteen year old take Driver Education?
Yes, they can take the entire 32 class hours, but the they cannot apply for a permit or get behind the wheel until they are 15.  We highlyl recommend that they wait to enroll until at least 2 months before their 15th birthday.

My child is involved in many activities at school and may need to mis several days. Is this okay?
They can miss up to  4 classes, but those classes must be made up within 90 days of original class start date. If the they miss more than 4 days, they are withdrawn from that class and re-entered in the next class. 

My child will be late for class. Is this okay?
We have a very strict policy concerning late entry to class. If your child is going to be late for class, it is best if they skip the class and do a make up lesson. The instructor will not let them in if they are late.

What if my child has a learning disability (i.e. dyslexic, ADD, etc)?  Can they take the driver education course?
Yes, they can take Driver Education. Be sure to tell us when the student enrolls that they have a special situation so we can let the instructor know. More study time at home and extra lessons with an isntructor wil likely be needed. 

What is a PROOF OF SCHOOL ENROLLMENT form?
Also known as a VOE, this form is obtained from the student’s high school. During the school year  this form expires every 30 days. During the summer  months, you will need to obtain the form the last week of school and it will be good May, June, and July. If you are 14 you will want to wait and obtain the form until you are 15.

  • For those from out of state or out of country: You should obtain a letter from the high school on official letterhead which states that the student attended at least 80 days of school last semester and is currently enrolled in school this semester and signed by the school official. (use exact wording)
  • Home School: The parent should write a letter stating that the student is home-schooled.
  • If enrolled in a GED program: talk to the Administrator about getting proof of school enrollment. If you have finished your GED, you will use the GED Certificate.

Can I get a hardship license for my child?
A hardship license is issued by the Department of Public Safety. If you want more information; call the DPS at 281-517-1333 or visit www.txdps.state.tx.us. The student must be 15 years of age and must have completed driver education. Reasons you may quality for a hardship include: parents divorced, parent deceased, parents handicapped or there is a serious illness in the family, or student must work in order to support the family.

Does my insurance go up when my child gets a permit?
You should call your insurance agent for specific information about your policy. 

My teen is under 18 and has license from another state, can they go to DPS and get a Texas license?
In Texas, a student cannot get a license unless he takes driver education. DPS may count an out of state Driver Education course if it consisted of at least 32 class hours, 7 hours driving, and 7 hours observation and effective May 1, 2010 20 hours of supervised driving with a parent or other adult licensed driver.  You will need to go to DPS with their license and Driver Education documentation from the other state, along with their original birth certificate, original social security card, and proof of school enrollment (VOE) to determine if they qualify for a license in Texas.

Can my child get 10% discount for Drivers Education and 10% discount for Driving Safety Course?
You can only get one 10% discount in Texas.  However, the Drug & Alcohol Awareness Course taught in SafeWay’s Driver Education course allows an extra 5%.

What course does an 18 year old take to get their license?
Anyone between the ages of 18 and 24 must take one of the following courses to be eligible for their driver license. SafeWay has several dates to choose from both of these courses.  Call 713-468-1313 to enroll today.

What if my student does not have a Social Security Card?
The social security card is required. For non-citizens, you may obtain a social security affidavit from the driving school or DPS.

Where do I get a replacement for a Social Security Card?
You can go to the Social Security Office and order a new card. You will need to take your original birth certificate and a picture ID OR passport. 

How do I replace a lost permit?
You will need to go DPS. Be sure to take your Social Security card, original American birth certificate, report card, AND a new proof of school enrollment form (VOE). 

Is there a deadline for finishing the driver education course?
Students are given 90 days to finish the classroom phase and 180 days to finish the driving phrase from the class start date.
